Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
