Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
